Week 5 Run 2 | Couch to 5K Program

Well I arrived at the Henley Lake this morning with trepidation. I was feeling sore from Tuesday and also from Thursday night’s CrossFit Lite class where we did jumping pull ups and push press.

I felt good enough to give it a go though, but I have to admit I sat in the car thinking about it for a while and whether I was feeling fit enough to run for two lots of 8 minutes. Psychologically this was going to be a challenge. So I thought anyway.

I started out at the lake (again by myself) and I’m enjoying this running time as thinking time. I started out strong with the warm up – my legs felt tired before I started and I know this week challenges most people on the programme. I’m a member of a group and a number of the other online members are on this week too.

I got into the first 8 minutes in which I was battling my mind and my legs. I was also battling through the endurance aspect of  running for 8 minutes.

Once I got a rhythm I felt better and 8 minutes doesn’t feel so much more than 5. When it came to it I was glad to get to the walk part of this run. I did slow down a bit for the walking due to feeling fatigued.

The second 8 minutes came around and I got more into a rhythm with this part of the run and I found it passed quicker. After the walk part I found it hard to get back into a good rhythm as my legs felt quite heavy. The end came sooner than I anticipated but Adam Lambert and Maroon 5 helped power me through to the end. As the song Moves Like Jagger boomed out my head said, “I’ll be finished before this song finishes”.

I can’t get over how much better my breathing is after giving up drinking wine. I’m sure eating better foods is also helping. I’m feeling very buzzed up by the changes in my fitness – the gains are real.

The next run will be a big challenge, we now get into 20 minute runs from here. I can really see myself running 5K.
